History of The Erasmus Hall H.S. Athletic Field And It's Football Team (1896-2010 Season)

Erasmus Field has been in use since 1907, initially for track and field, soccer, lacrosse, and baseball and beginning in 1923 for football. In 1928, Herman Rosner, owner of a semi-pro baseball team, constructed wooden stands to seat 5,000 fans at the field.
After the 1943 football season the stands were condemned for football use and the varsity football team did not play another home game at Erasmus Field until 1993 (50 years later) when new bleachers were erected and astro turf was installed.  The field was named in honor of the great Sid Luckman who won the city title and went on to become an All-American at Columbia University and led the Chicago Bears to four NFL titles.  The scoreboard is named after another Erasmus alumnus, Al Davis (owner of the Oakland Raiders and the field house is named after Shawn Lee who played in the NFL.
In the early years and into the 1930’s the “Dutchmen” or “Flying Dutchmen” as they were called on a regular basis and in games that counted played freshman and junior varsity college football teams, athletic clubs as well as military academies.  The teams on the following pages consist of the lifetime record of every team Erasmus has ever played.
Also in the early days it was not uncommon to have their athletic fields built nowhere in the vicinity of its school buildings.  For example are Erasmus Field, Midwood Field (formerly George W. Wingate Athletic Field), Boys High Field (now called Old Boys High Field) and Flushing Memorial Field.

Newsday, New York Daily Mirror, New York Herald Tribune, Brooklyn Eagle, New York World Telegram and Sun (all these publications covered high school sports extensively thru the 1960’s.)  Also the Erasmus Hall school newspaper “The Dutchmen” was used whenever possible.  Scores and results will be updated over time.

1926 – (All 8 games result in shutout --- Erasmus 4-2-2)

Probably the Most “Unusual” and “Meaningful” Loss in Erasmus History

Saturday November 18, 1922 – In 1922 schools were limited by the state to a certain number of games.  There was also no play-off systems in place.  Usually the team with the best record was declared the City Champion.  It happened by luck that the two best teams in the city were Erasmus and Poly Prep and they were playing each other in a season ending football game at Ebbets field.  Previously if two or more teams were tied with the best record a committee of newspaper H.S. sports writers would vote on who should be the City Champ.
Late in the game with no score (the goal posts were located on the goal line --- not 10yds. back in the end of the end zone as they are now) --- Poly Prep attempted a 35 yd. drop-kick FG. The FG was deflected by and Erasmus player waiting to catch it.  It went out of his grasp and over the crossbar for a FG.
Erasmus lost the game and a city championship
3-0!
